Biography
Johnny Werkbrouck (born in Torhout on 16.07.1959): Being a sculptor is his job, to sculpture is his life. Marble is his passion, perfection and authenticity his goal! Give him a clean block and the proper material and he cuts away all the excess material to bring out tthe essence of “his” stone. What remains is his personal, honest representation of the classical ideal of beauty.
His young, pure, nude female figures radiate calm, serenity and perfection, and they are also the sober, realistic portrayal of women. They have withdrawn from the stone or hide behind a still partly left rough marble mass and thus refer to where the image comes from. Therefore, the bases remain rough and they carry the traces of cutting, drilling and chiselling. They contrast strongly against the more finished areas as the human body they bear while still a mild shape of the gradine or the tooth chisel tool is to be found. Perhaps the artist refers to the whimsical, to the mysteriousness of womanhood. His muscular arms struggle themselves in their full glory or hold firm to another arm: Gripping witnesses of muscular male virility combined with the caress of fingertips touching one another looking for tenderness, warmth … The contradiction between the rough material and the soft charisma of the creator. It is quite clear: Time and again the sculptor succeeds to finish his marble to perfection and to let it witness of own vision on female attractiveness on the one hand and male power on the other hand.
